Lionel Grigson's A Jazz Chord Book: A Comprehensive Guide for Jazz Musicians
Lionel Grigson was an English jazz pianist, cornettist, trumpeter, composer, writer and teacher, who in the 1980s started the jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music[^2^]. He was also the author of several books on jazz theory and practice, including A Jazz Chord Book, which was first published in 1980 and revised in 1993.
A Jazz Chord Book is a comprehensive guide for jazz musicians of all levels and styles, covering the basics of harmony, chord symbols, voicings, progressions, substitutions, modulations and more. The book also includes hundreds of examples and exercises to help the reader master the concepts and apply them to real music situations. The book is divided into four parts:
Part I: The Elements of Harmony. This part introduces the fundamentals of scales, intervals, triads, seventh chords and extensions, as well as common chord types and qualities.
Part II: Chord Symbols and Voicings. This part explains how to read and write chord symbols, how to voice chords on various instruments, how to use inversions and drop voicings, and how to create smooth voice leading.
Part III: Chord Progressions. This part explores the most common chord progressions in jazz, such as the blues, the II-V-I, the cycle of fifths, the modal interchange and the Coltrane changes. It also shows how to use secondary dominants, tritone substitutions, backdoor progressions and other techniques to enrich the harmonic vocabulary.
Part IV: Modulation and Reharmonization. This part covers the methods and effects of changing keys in jazz, such as direct modulation, pivot chords, chromatic modulation and modal modulation. It also teaches how to reharmonize melodies and standards using diatonic, chromatic and modal substitutions.
A Jazz Chord Book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about jazz harmony and improve their skills as a jazz musician. It is written in a clear and concise style, with plenty of examples and exercises to illustrate the concepts. It is also suitable for self-study or as a textbook for jazz courses. As Grigson himself wrote in the preface:
\"This book is not intended to be a definitive work on jazz harmony; rather it is an attempt to present some of the basic principles in a practical way. It is hoped that it will stimulate further exploration and discovery by the reader.\"
In addition to A Jazz Chord Book, Lionel Grigson also wrote other books on jazz theory and practice, such as Practical Jazz, Jazz from Scratch, The Augmented Scale in Jazz and Jazz on Record. He also composed several original pieces and arrangements for jazz ensembles, some of which are included in his books. He was a prolific and influential figure in the British jazz scene, who inspired and taught many generations of jazz musicians. He died in 1994 at the age of 52, leaving behind a legacy of jazz education and creativity. aa16f39245
